Initiation into the mysteries of statues and groves of Versailles

In 1661, while André Le Nôtre is responsible for the creation and development of the gardens of Versailles, Charles Le Brun supervises, with his team of sculptors, installation of the scenery : fountains, statues and vases. More than 300 sculptures adorn the gardens, as originals or copies of antique models made by residents of the French Academy in Rome.

Each with a special significance : why is Plato looking towards Atlantis ? Why are Circe and Ulysses separated ? Why is there an Indian escorted by an alligator next to Bacchus?
